Spring is here and we are excited to get back to fun and events! |

Even though we have not been open this winter, our volunteers have been busy bees behind the scenes. We have upgraded our computers and museum software thanks to a grant from the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Foundation . We have also installed a new instant hot water heater(thanks JaySan!) and been addressing some of our other infrastructure needs. We can't wait to get back to seeing you all again. We will be resuming Monday hours from 10-2 starting April 1st, or you may contact us to schedule a visit. |

In 1899, an electric rail line ran from New Bedford through Freetown and Lakeville to Middleboro and eventually Brockton. This route became known as The Lake Shore Route. The electric trolley cars operated until 1919 and employed a few Freetown residents, including George Chase, Harry Allen, Clarence Gurney, Ernest Reynolds, Charles Goodhue, and William, John, Alfred, and Julius Lang. Shared is a story from Barbara Cole's notes told by her grandfather, Charles Goodhue. "Grandpa was a conductor, and one hot sunny day in summer, they picked up a man carrying a hive of bees. They sat him in the front seat. Next, they stopped and picked up a lady who took the seat behind the bee man. They traveled a short distance when the woman jumped on the seat, lifted her skirts, and pulled at the elastic of her bloomers, shrieking in a piercing voice, " It's got me! It's got me!" The man and his bees were put off the car.". Shared: Photo from the Car Men picnic in 1922 and Map showing the route |
